Brief Information

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the notification for the Junior Engineer Examination, 2026 for recruitment to various Junior Engineer posts in Government of India organizations/offices and for the post of Scientific Assistant in India Meteorological Department (IMD). The posts are Group 'B' posts in Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission with a pay scale of ₹35,400–₹1,12,400. A total of 1,748 tentative vacancies have been notified. Eligible candidates can submit the online application from 02 September 2026 to 22 September 2026 through the official SSC website or the mySSC mobile application. Paper-I is tentatively scheduled for October/November 2026 and Paper-II for December 2026.

Important Eligibility Notes

  • Experience, wherever prescribed, must have been acquired after completion of the requisite educational qualification.
  • Internship, training or research experience obtained during the course of acquiring the educational qualification will not be counted as the prescribed experience.
  • The result of the essential educational qualification must have been declared by the University/Institute by the prescribed cut-off date and the candidate must have been declared passed.
  • Mere processing of the result by the University/Institute by the cut-off date does not fulfil the educational qualification requirement.
  • Engineering and other prohibited programmes obtained through ODL/Online mode are subject to the applicable statutory/regulatory provisions and recognition requirements.
  • Candidates opting for JE (Mechanical) are also eligible for JE (Electrical & Mechanical), subject to the prescribed conditions.
  • Candidates opting for JE (Telecom) may also be eligible for Scientific Assistant in IMD/JE (Electrical), subject to fulfilling the prescribed educational qualification.
  • Candidates opting for JE (Electrical) may also be eligible for JE (Telecom), subject to the prescribed educational qualification, and JE (Electrical & Mechanical).

Date of birth entered in the application must match the date of birth recorded in the Matriculation/Secondary Examination Certificate. Mismatch may result in rejection of candidature.


Nationality / Citizenship

  1. Citizen of India; or
  2. Subject of Nepal; or
  3. Subject of Bhutan; or
  4. Person of Indian origin who has migrated from the countries specified in the notification with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Candidates belonging to categories other than Indian citizens, where applicable, must possess the required certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.


Reservation & PwBD Information

  • Reservation provisions apply for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwBD categories as per applicable Government rules.
  • Reservation rosters and vacancy earmarking are handled by the concerned Indenting/User Organizations.
  • There is no reservation for Ex-Servicemen because the Junior Engineer posts covered by the notice are Group 'B' posts, although applicable age relaxation is available.
  • Except for BRO, the Junior Engineer posts have been identified for specified PwBD categories subject to applicable provisions/exemptions.
  • JE Telecom in the Department of Telecommunications is identified as suitable for certain visual/locomotor disability categories as specified in the notification.
  • JE Civil, Mechanical & Electrical and Scientific Assistant in IMD are not identified as suitable for Visually Handicapped persons, except JE Telecom in DoT, as specified by SSC.
  • PwBD candidates must select the correct disability category during application. Subsequent change of PwBD category is not allowed.
  • EWS candidates seeking reservation must possess the prescribed Income & Asset Certificate valid for the relevant financial year.

Fee can be paid online through BHIM UPI, Net Banking, Visa, MasterCard, Maestro or RuPay Debit Card. Fee once paid is not refundable and cannot be adjusted against another examination or selection.


Online Application Process

  1. Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on the new SSC website.
  2. OTR generated on the old SSC website ssc.nic.in will not function on the new website.
  3. Log in through the registration number and password.
  4. Select Junior Engineer Examination, 2026 under the Live Examination section.
  5. Select the appropriate post and qualifying educational qualification.
  6. Select the appropriate subject/stream for the Computer-Based Examination.
  7. Enter educational, category and other required information.
  8. Capture/upload the required live photograph and signature.
  9. Preview the complete application and verify every field.
  10. Pay the application fee if applicable.
  11. Submit the application form successfully.
  12. Take a printout/copy of the final submitted application form for future reference.

The application can be submitted through the official SSC website or through the mySSC mobile application.


Photograph & Signature Requirements

  • The application module captures a real-time photograph.
  • Use good lighting and a plain background.
  • Camera should be at eye level.
  • Face the camera directly and look straight ahead.
  • The complete face should remain inside the prescribed camera area.
  • Do not wear a cap, mask or spectacles while capturing the live photograph.
  • Do not photograph an existing photograph.
  • Signature must be in JPEG/JPG format.
  • Signature file size: 10–20 KB.
  • Signature dimensions: approximately 6.0 cm × 2.0 cm.
  • Blurred or miniature signatures can lead to rejection.
  • Candidates using Aadhaar-Based Authentication receive the relaxation specified by SSC regarding rejection on the basis of photograph/signature standards.

Aadhaar-Based Authentication

SSC advises candidates to opt for Aadhaar-Based Authentication during One-Time Registration. Candidates using Aadhaar authentication will not be rejected merely because their uploaded photograph/signature does not meet the prescribed standards, as specified in the notice.

Candidates who have undergone Aadhaar-Based Authentication are also not required to produce recent colour photographs and original valid photo identity proof for admission to the Computer-Based Examination venue, as specified by SSC.

  • A candidate can correct and resubmit the application a maximum of two times during the correction window.
  • Correction charges apply to all candidates irrespective of gender/category.
  • If correction charges are not successfully received, the corrected application will not be accepted and the previous valid application will remain valid.
  • After expiry of the correction window, no further correction/modification will be permitted.

Scientific Assistant candidates must choose one of Part-D, Part-E or Part-F according to the educational stream selected in the application. The selected subject/stream cannot subsequently be changed.


Negative Marking & Important Exam Rules

  • Paper-I: 0.25 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • Paper-II: 1 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • Both papers contain objective-type multiple-choice questions.
  • Questions are set in Hindi and English only.
  • A scientific calculator will be available on the computer screen throughout the examination.
  • Physical calculator is not permitted inside the examination laboratory.
  • IS 456:2000 Code of Practice table and Steam Table, if required, will be available on the candidate's computer console.
  • Answer-key challenges are submitted online and the prescribed charge is ₹50 per question.
  • There is no provision for re-evaluation/re-checking of examination scores.

Paper-I is qualifying in nature. Final merit is based on normalized Paper-II scores along with post/organization/office preference and fulfilment of the prescribed eligibility conditions.

Normalization & Final Merit

  • If an examination is conducted in multiple shifts, marks will be normalized as per SSC procedure.
  • Electrical and Mechanical marks are normalized by treating the respective papers as different shifts for applicable common posts.
  • Part-D, Part-E and Part-F for Scientific Assistant in IMD are also normalized by treating them as different shifts.
  • Normalized Paper-I marks are used for shortlisting candidates for Paper-II.
  • Only normalized Paper-II scores are used for determining final merit.

Post Preference

  • Post/Department/Organization preference will be taken through the Online Option Form before the declaration of the First Round of Tentative Allocation (FRTA).
  • A candidate will not be considered for a post/organization for which the required preference has not been submitted.
  • Preferences once submitted are FINAL and IRREVERSIBLE.
  • No subsequent request for change of post/department preference will be entertained.
  • A candidate who does not submit post preference within the prescribed time will not be considered for any post in FRTA/final result.
  • Once a post is allotted, SSC will not reallocate the candidate to another preference merely because the candidate fails to satisfy that allotted post's physical, medical, educational or other post-specific requirements.

BRO Special Eligibility & Physical Test

Important: Only male candidates are eligible for Junior Engineer posts in Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

  • BRO posts have stringent Physical Efficiency Test, physical and medical standards.
  • Physical and medical standards are given in Annexure-XVI of the notification.
  • Selected candidates have to qualify the prescribed BRO requirements after final result.
  • One Mile Run: Must be completed within 10 minutes; passing the test is mandatory.
  • The One Mile Run is conducted at GREF Centre, Pune, for candidates qualifying through SSC before further medical examination.
  • Failure to satisfy BRO physical/medical requirements may lead to cancellation and SSC may not reallocate such candidates to another post.
  • BRO candidates declared medically fit are inducted into the General Reserve Engineer Force and undergo initial training at GREF Centre, Dighi Camp, Pune.
  • After training, posting can be anywhere in India according to available vacancies.

PwBD / Scribe Facility

  • Eligible candidates may avail the prescribed Scribe/Technology/Assistive Device facility according to SSC rules.
  • Compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour of examination is provided to eligible candidates under the prescribed provisions.
  • For a normal 2-hour paper, this results in a total duration of 2 hours 40 minutes.
  • Candidates using their own scribe must comply with the prescribed documentation and scribe requirements.
  • Required scribe-related documents may have to be produced at the examination centre and during Document Verification.

Examination Centre & Admit Card

  • Admission Certificates are made available on the SSC website; they are not sent by post/email.
  • Examination city/centre information is expected to be uploaded approximately 10 days before the examination.
  • Admission Certificate download facility is expected approximately 3–4 days before the examination.
  • Candidates should regularly check the official SSC website for updates.
  • SSC reserves the right to divert candidates from a centre to another centre where required.

Documents Required at Examination Centre

For candidates who have not undergone Aadhaar-Based Authentication, the notice requires:

  • Printed Admission Certificate.
  • At least two recent passport-size colour photographs.
  • Original valid photo ID containing the Date of Birth matching the Admission Certificate.
  • Acceptable photo IDs include Voter ID, Driving Licence, PAN Card, Passport, School/College ID, Employer ID, Ex-Serviceman Discharge Book and other Government-issued photo IDs as specified.
  • If the photo ID does not contain Date of Birth, an additional original DOB document must be carried.
  • PwBD/PwD candidates using scribe/assistive facilities must carry the prescribed supporting documents.

Document Verification

Document Verification of provisionally shortlisted candidates is conducted by the concerned User Department after declaration of the final result.

  • Matriculation/Secondary Certificate.
  • Educational Qualification Certificate.
  • Experience Certificate, wherever applicable.
  • Caste/Category Certificate, wherever applicable.
  • Disability Certificate, wherever applicable.
  • Ex-Servicemen documents, wherever applicable.
  • Relevant certificate for age relaxation, wherever applicable.
  • No Objection Certificate for candidates already employed in Government/Government undertakings.
  • Documents supporting change of name, where applicable.
  • Any other document specified in the Admission Certificate or by the User Department.

If any claim made in the Online Application Form cannot be supported by the required documents during Document Verification, the candidature may be cancelled.


All India Service Liability

Candidates selected for appointment are liable to serve anywhere in India. The posts carry All India Service Liability (AISL). A User Organization/Office may allot a State, Union Territory or Zone, and the selected candidate may be required to acquire proficiency in the local language for confirmation where applicable.


Probation

Candidates appointed through this examination will be on probation for a period of two years. During probation, candidates may be required to undergo prescribed training or pass examinations specified by the Controlling Authority. On successful completion of probation and subject to being found fit, confirmation may be made by the Cadre Controlling Authority.


Tie-Breaking Rules

  1. Higher marks in Part-I of Paper-I: General Intelligence & Reasoning.
  2. Higher marks in Part-II of Paper-I: General Awareness.
  3. Older candidate according to Date of Birth gets higher position.
  4. Alphabetical order of candidate names.

Important Application Instructions

  • Only one Online Application Form is allowed during the normal application period.
  • Candidates should submit the application well before the last date instead of waiting for the final hours.
  • Verify all details before final submission.
  • Keep the registration number, password, registered mobile number and email ID safe.
  • Keep a copy of the final submitted application form.
